Tip. 1: Little Giant Flexible Pond Liner
Tip 2: Beckett Pond Filter - Filter, Fountain & Pump in 1!
1. Little Giant Flexible Pond Liner

Once we had decided that we were going to excavate our backyard pond we chose the Little Giant Flexible Pond Liner. We had had a preformed pond in our last home many years ago, but wanted the flexibility to be able to have a shape of our own design within tight perimeters. This product promised the flexibility we needed.

We wanted to keep our costs down and whilst this brand was not the cheapest, we were encouraged by the 20 year warranty and the strength of the 'hi tech' material.

Labelling a pond liner as easy to install is a little steep (its always going to be a little fiddly) but this one exceeded our expectations and as soon as you get this product out of the packaging the quality is clear.

As we wanted a garden water feature with fish, this liner was perfect as it promotes friendly bacteria in the water and is designed for aquatic life.

2. Beckett Pond Filter

Having had a pond in our previous garden we knew that once the water was in, we would want to add a filter/pump particularly as we planned to have many fish.

This particular filter was exciting because it had a filter, pump and fountain in one unit. The fountain head itself came in two varieties so we could have an even stronger dramatic effect if we were feeling brave!

We would normally invest in something like this from our regular garden store Yardiac but as such we took the plunge and haven't looked back. Our fish love it too.

This filter can be used for ponds up to 700 gallons. Its filter box is compact so it can be easily disguised in your flowerbed with obruding too much, unlike some filters on the market. The warranty is not as big as the pond liner but at two years it is still reassuring.

Surprisingly many backyard ponds contain more fish than a pond in the wild, so it is often beneficial to invest in some form of pump or filter system to help keep the water clean. Typically these work via an electric pump and sometimes you can get a pump kit that also acts as a fountain.

Fish Pond Supplies

If you have aquatic life living in your pond, you may need some crucial equipment

What type of pump do I need?

If you have a small pond, you will need what is known as a submersible pump which runs off low voltage. If your backyard pond is on the larger side or if you have substantial garden water features such as fountains and streams, then you are more likely going to need an outside pump. As you would imagine these tend to be more complex as you need to run it off the electricity from the home or garage.

If you have a fountain then you will need to select a pump that allows you to pump water under high pressure but at a low output and vice versa if you have a waterfall, as the water needs to defy gravity and surge upwards.

How can I be sure my garden water feature remains healthy and clean?

Well the key to keeping the water nice and healthy is thanks to the filter system within the pump. Either your pump will have an internal unit (sitting beneath the pond) or an external unit (which you may hide in a nearby flowerbed).

The main difference is that for internal filters you need to make sure the filter is near to the pump but for external filters the pump needs to be sat far apart so you do not keep pumping clean water back through the filter unit.

POND SITING CONSIDERATIONS
1. Look for a sheltered spot to avoid leaves blowing into the garden water feature

2. Consider where your power supply will come from

3. Do not build a backyard pond next to trees as their root growth may cause problems for the liner

4. Steer clear from areas that are prone to flooding - excess water can get under the pond liner

5. Choose a site away from direct sunlight during peak sun hours
