Garden Water Feature - Step by Step
When building a garden water feature, planning is key!
Getting started with your garden water feature is about detailed planning before you even get close to digging a hole!
You need to know exactly how it will look (via a diagram or plan), what materials you need, which tools you need to do the job and when building backyard ponds, what to do with all the soil you dig up.
Once you have decided whether to do the digging yourself, be sure to determine to state of the ground. Are you looking at soft sandy conditions or stubborn clay?
Flexible liner pond or performed pond unit?
This month's Garden Water Feature: Flexible liner pond - great for unusual shapes and a modern feel, makes highly versatile backyard ponds.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO FLEXIBLE LINER POND
Step 1: Mark out the edge with soft sand
Step 2: Dig around the perimeter to the first level - the marginal shelf. Then start to go deeper towards the centre piece
Step 3: Use bricks to reinforce the outside edge & prevent the
perimeter from collapsing
Step 4: Lay liner over suitable underlay e.g. carpet, soft sand. Ensure the liner overlaps the perimeter evenly all the way around. Cut any excess liner with sharp scissors.
Step 5: Begin to add water whilst holding down the liner edges. You will notice the creases start to disappear. Dont worry about any excess liner, you can cut this off after the pond is full.
Step 6: Lay stone slabs to form hard edging. Mortar can be used but be careful not to drop this toxic substance into the water.
TIP! An overhang in the hard edging will help hide the liner.
